Spanning 26 countries on five continents, AES generates and provides power to people in more countries around the world than any other company. For almost 25 years, AES has provided the critical energy needed to power communities and economies the world over. And our global impact is as wide-ranging as our scale: our generation and utilities businesses have the capacity to serve 100 million people worldwide.

Through our 123 generation plants, AES produces electricity and sells power to utilities, wholesalers and commercial buyers under long-term contracts or in competitive markets. Our plants have an installed generation capacity of 44,000 MW and produce power from a wide range of fuel sources, including natural gas, coal, oil, biomass, water and, more recently, wind. Our expansion into wind generation is both recent and significant. Since September 2004, AES has amassed 2,750 MW of wind energy projects across the United States. And we are in two U.S. markets that have 50 percent of the installed wind generation megawatts in the country: California and Texas.

AES sells and distributes electricity to more than 11 million customers, including residential, business and municipal clients through our 15 distribution companies. Our three large utilities supply electricity to the metropolitan areas of São Paulo, Brazil; Indianapolis, Indiana, USA; and Caracas, Venezuela. AES owns utilities that serve smaller service areas as well, primarily in developing countries, like Ukraine, where electricity demand is expected to grow faster than in more developed markets.

Our key strengths lie in our global scale and distinctive operational and transactional skill sets. We are located in 60 percent of the locations where energy demand growth is expected to occur around the world and can quickly capitalize on global power market opportunities. Ninety percent of our 30,000 people live and work outside the United States, providing AES with unique global perspectives and deep local insights. The diversity of AES's portfolio—in terms of geography, fuel type and technology—also means that we can effectively weather market and political fluctuations. And our network of professionals, who share knowledge and expertise around the world, help us to continually improve our operational expertise and customer service, no matter the locale.
