The economic turmoil experienced over the last few months has sent steel markets and participants reeling. Prices in 2008 rose to historic peaks in the middle of the year, only to fall back to levels seen at the end of 2007.
In just the past few days, however, global steel prices have stabilized, spot market iron ore prices are on the upswing, and suppliers may be sensing a market poised to turn in their favour. Still — the system of annual contracts, between raw material supplier, steel producer, steel distributor and most importantly steel consumer — continues to creek under the strain of this volatile environment.
An understanding of steel markets and their supply chain dynamics is vital to creating commercial strategies that can reduce exposure to price volatility. Developing flexible pricing mechanisms for each link of the value chain may well be the only way to achieve stability as the economic climate remains uncertain.
Platts 2nd Annual Steel Markets Focus conference will explore the changing economic environment steel markets now face. It will bring together leading raw material suppliers, steel producers, distributors and traders — as well as consumers and members of the financial community — to debate and discuss the commercial strategies needed to navigate in 2009.
Key topics discussed will include:
- The changing commercial structure of steel markets
- Raw material supply and its relationship with the steel industry
- Drivers affecting steel price volatility
- Differing pricing mechanisms and their impact on the value chain
- Price volatility, risk and what its means for steel consumers
- Future cost concerns to the industry in its response to climate change.
