European naphtha crack spread in recent months have been erratic, moving in and out of very negative territory. This inconsistency is particularly striking as there have been sustained periods of strength with record high flat prices and cracks.
This volatile crack spread projection, combined with the latest price of crude, a closure of arbitrage to Asia, new cracking facilities coming on-stream and a weakening demand across Europe; could leave naphtha’s market position very unpredictable.
With demand from the petrochemical sector now hesitant in Europe, will end users continue to switch to alternative feedstocks? What is the future of steam cracking capability, financing projects and expansion and will high prices dictate the future of downstream margins?
Platts Predicting Feedstocks: Naphtha’s Market Progression conference will consider the recent shocks in the naphtha market as well as representing a discourse on its future outlook within the wider feedstocks and petrochemicals sector. Will recent market trends prove sustaining, or can we expect a return to form for European naphtha markets?

- The prominence of naphtha: Availability, price and future projections
- What will set naphtha price in the future?
- Naphtha’s flexibility in feedstock economics
- Financial implications of downstream margin volatility
